HAMPTON, VA–The Morehead City Marlins (29-8) lost 5-2 to the Peninsula Pilots (20-19) on Monday night, just their eighth loss of the year.
The Marlins consistently put runners on the bases, but left 17 runners stranded over the course of the game. On three occasions, the Fish failed to score with the bases loaded.
Peninsula hit the ball well despite solid outings from all of the Marlins pitchers. Bryce Nicolay went for three innings giving up just one hit, with Matt Hubbard, Joey Calabretti, Kole Hopkins, and Sage Ferguson to follow.
Hubbard looked great in his first inning, but gave up a string of hits in the fifth in which the Pilots scored four runs.
The Marlins had a chance in the ninth with two on and one out. Zach Greenberg grounded into a fielder’s choice, then Diego Diaz hit a bloop single to left to load the bases, but once again failed to convert.
The Marlins will be off tomorrow and host the Virginia Beach Valor in their next game on Wednesday, July 22. First pitch for the exhibition is scheduled for 6:30pm. Fans can watch the game on Home Team Network with pregame coverage starting at 6:20pm.
