MOREHEAD CITY, NC–The Morehead City Marlins came back from a five-run deficit to beat the Greenville Yard Gnomes 11-6.
The Marlins had three days off this week due to two rainouts, but still hit the ball well early, with three hits in the first inning. Sloppy play and base running mistakes consistently left runners stranded, however, and gave the Yard Gnomes an early 5-0 lead.
The Marlins cleaned it up in the third inning, recording six hits back-to-back to close the gap to 5-4.
Morehead City continued to tack on runs later, with one in the fifth. Greenville would immediately get that run back in the sixth, tied at 6-6.
Pitching changes in the seventh would seal the deal for the win. Greenville used three pitchers, giving up a combined two hits, four runs, four walks, and one hit-by-pitch.
Morehead City veteran Spencer Cipro had a great bounce-back outing, going for 3.2 innings with four hits, one run, and seven strikeouts. Kole Hopkins, Brandon Carter, and Matthew Heard also made outings in relief, allowing no hits in their combined 1.2 innings.
The Marlins will travel to Greenville tomorrow to play the Yard Gnomes at Guy Smith Stadium. First pitch is at 6:30pm. Fans can watch the game on Home Team Network or listen for free to the Marlins Radio Broadcast on Mixlr. Pregame coverage will start at 6:20pm.
