MOREHEAD CITY, NC – After losing two straight, The Marlins got back on track tonight.

Four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Morehead City to a much needed 5-2 win over the Florence RedWolves on Friday night at Big Rock Stadium.

“I was happy with our resilience offensively,” said Marlins head coach Jesse Lancaster. “We left some runs out there early, I felt like we could’ve had a 4-5 run lead in the middle innings, but we didn’t situationally hit very well. (Ty) Bothwell pitched really well for us, and we would’ve liked to not use Ryder, but he did the job for us like he usually does.”

The Marlins came out of the gates early. Jack Harris (Newberry) scored an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Another run would not be scored, though, until the bottom of the seventh inning.

An RBI double from Justin Johnson (Lafayette) extended the Marin lead. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) would follow with an RBI single. From there, Joe Mason (Mount Olive) and Gibson Krzeminski (Canisius) took care of business, drawing bases loaded walks.

Florence responded with one of its own in the eighth, and another in the ninth, but it was not enough. Ryder Yakel (Harding) earned the save, striking two of the three batters he faced.

Morehead City’s pitching was lights out. Ty Bothwell (Indiana) struck out seven batters, giving up only two hits and no runs in five and a third inning pitched. Bothwell’s efforts earned him his second win of the season. Colt Webb (Charleston) would follow Bothwell, giving up two earned runs, but striking out six batters.

The Marlins move to 13-6 on the season, sitting two and a half games back behind the Peninsula Pilots in the CPL East. Next up for Morehead City is a trip to Wilmington to take on the Sharks. The Marlins must win their final three games, and the Pilots must lose their last two, to force a tie atop of the CPL East before the end of the first half on June 27. First pitch from Legion Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. is set for 7:05.
