GREENVILLE, NC–The Morehead City Marlins clinched the playoffs Saturday night with an 18-0 shutout against the Greenville Yard Gnomes.
The Marlins prowess at the plate since the All-Star break continued, albeit to a new extreme, with a CPL single-game record eight home runs. Jovan Gill hit three, his second three-homer game this week. Gill now has seven home runs this week in three games.
Joey Calabretti also had two home runs, along with Jake Howard, Jakob Haynes, and Braxton Thomas.
The Marlins finished the night with 15 hits, their third double-digit hits game this week, all of which were against Greenville.
The Marlins gave up a combined two hits across their 13th run-rule win. Aidan Newton was hitless across three innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Matthew Heard, Sage Ferguson, Nuno Parache, and Gavin Zoeller followed with an inning each. The group allowed just one hit, gave up zero walks, and combined for nine strikeouts.
The Marlins will take a day to rest tomorrow before traveling to Hampton to play the Peninsula Pilots on Monday. First pitch is at 7:00pm at War Memorial Stadium.
