MOREHEAD CITY, NC–The Marlins defeated the Tri-City Chili Peppers with another stellar run-rule victory 13-2.
The win come off the bats of nearly every Marlin in the lineup. Bray Touchstone got the scoring started, scoring Jon Howard twice on an RBI triple and double, in the second and fourth innings respectively.
It was the fifth inning that caused the Marlins to run away with it. Two home runs from Jovan Gill and Joey Calabretti and doubles from Jakob Haynes and Logan Lowe against Tri-City’s reliever William Wian gave Morehead City a substantial 9-2 lead.
Tri-City pitching struggled in the sixth inning now with Michael Williams on the rubber, who got the last out of the fifth. Williams allowed one hit, four walks, and a hit by pitch, scoring four more runs to put Morehead City in run-rule territory. Connor Hassan would go on to finish the inning on the mound.
The Marlins pitching shined as well behind Carson Gipson, who got the win, with two inning of work. Owen Schneider’s second start of the season set the tone through four innings, with three hits, one run, and two strikeouts to his name. Matthew Heard finished it out in the seventh with one hit and one strikeout.
Cruz Harlin also locked down the second base spot with two highlight plays in the sixth inning. The first was a hard-hit ball up the middle, in which he made a backhand grab with a jumping throw to Gill at first. The second was a spinning grab on the forehand.
The Morehead City Motorboaters will return to Big Rock Stadium tomorrow night against the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm on June 12th.
