MOREHEAD CITY, NC–The Marlins defeated the Greenville Yard Gnomes 8-3, after a late first pitch due to weather.
The Yard Gnomes struck first, plating runs in the top of the first and top of the second.
Morehead City responded with a run in the bottom of the second.
After a pair of walks in the fourth, Lincoln Strump laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Diego Diaz then walked to score a run. Grant Russo added a run after a sacrifice fly, and another came around after an error from the Yard Gnomes’ second baseman.
The game was quiet after that, with Greenville adding a lone run in the sixth, before the Marlins added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Joey Hiller started on the mound, going for four innings, two runs, five walks, and seven strikeouts.
Kole Hopkins, Ryan Jackson, and Matthew Heard followed, each recording two strikeouts. Hopkins was the pitcher of record and added a win to his stats.
Gavin Zoeller finished the game in the ninth, not allowing a baserunner and recording the save.
The Marlins will travel to Holly Springs tomorrow to play the Salamanders at the North Main Athletic Complex. First pitch is set for 6:30pm. Fans can watch the game on Home Team Network or listen to the Marlins Radio Broadcast for free on Mixlr. Pregame coverage will start at 6:20pm.
