WILMINGTON, NC – Another Saturday, another heartbreaker. This time, in Wilmington.
A go-ahead 3-run home run, just like last Saturday in Florence, gave the Sharks a 5-4 comeback win at Legion Stadium on Saturday night, evening the Golden Chumbucket Series at 4 apiece.
Jack Harris (Newberry) opened up the scoring, hitting a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. Wilmington would immediately respond with two runs of its own. Morehead City would clap back in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI single from Phillip Glasser (Youngstown State).
The score would remain tied at two until the eighth inning. Zack Miller (Catawba) hit a clutch 2-run home run to left center field. But once again, the Sharks responded. A 3-run go-ahead home run off the bat of Andrew Ciufo was the icing on the cake.
Despite another no decision, Justin Kleinsorge (Regis) had a strong outing. The righty struck out six batter in four innings pitched, giving up only two earned runs.
The loss for the Marlins, and the win for the Pilots on Saturday night, gives Peninsula the CPL East First Half title and a bid to the Petitt Cup Playoffs. The Marlins look to finish the first half strong in a doubleheader Sunday night against the Sharks at Big Rock Stadium. Game 1 gets started 6:00; game 2 will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game 1. You can purchase your tickets here.
