COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA–The Marlins traveled to Colonial Heights, Virginia, for a doubleheader against the Tri-City Chili Peppers. Morehead City fell 8-4 in the first game.
They struggled at the plate, only recording three hits across the seven innings.
They plated two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, off Jackson Sgro’s first home run as a Marlin, and one on an RBI groundout from Diego Diaz in the sixth.
The Chili Peppers came out of the gates hot, scoring one run in the first inning before a flurry of runs in the second.
They recorded six hits and five runs in the second inning. Then, in the fourth, they added two more to secure the win.
Spencer Cipro started on the mound going for four innings, giving up 12 hits and eight runs before being relieved by Tyler DeLuzio.
DeLuzio went for two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five.
In the second game of the double header, the Marlins scored first off a solo shot from Bray Touchstone, his first of the season.
However the Chili Peppers tied it up in the bottom of the inning.
Morehead City followed, scoring four runs in the top of the third, two of which came off a single from Braxton Thomas.
The Chili Peppers recorded four hits and plated three runs in the fourth tying the game before taking the lead off a home run from Sylas Mills, their third of the game.
The Marlins plated one more in the top of the fifth as well but were held scoreless the rest of the game.
Ryan Jackson started the second game, going for 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, along with three strikeouts.
Ronnie Rowley and coach Sam Carel were both ejected during the seventh, only moments before the game ended. Rowley is expected to serve the standard league suspension of one game.
The Marlins will return home tomorrow to face the Holly Springs Salamanders at 6:30. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:15 on HomeTeam Network.
