Morehead City, NC — An eruption in the fourth inning got the Marlins over the hump on Monday night.
After trailing 2-0, Morehead City stormed back with eight runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth inning, winning soundly by a final of 12-3.
It all started with a Justin Johnson (Lafayette) single, followed by a Zack Miller (Catawba) walk. From there, Conner VanCleave (Kansas) saw a couple wild pitches go by him, one of which scoring Johnson, before he hit an RBI single to tie things up at 2.
From there, it went downhill for Fuquay-Varina.
Gibson Krzeminski got the go ahead RBI single, who ended up scoring alongside VanCleave on wild pitches. The icing on the cake came when Johnson went up for the second time in the same inning. The middle infielder tacked on a three-run inside the park home run, after Twins center fielder RJ Johnson slipped when he tried to make the play.
Morehead City would get two more in the fifth, thanks to a two-run RBI single from Phillip Glasser (Youngstown State). The Marlins would put on two more in the sixth, thanks to Tyler Clark-Chiapprelli (Washburn). Clark-Chiapparelli hit an RBI single, along with scoring on a wild pitch.
The win against the Twins was the first exhibition game of the season, but Jesse Lancaster and company are back in CPL play Tuesday night. The Marlins travel to Wilson to take on the Tobs at Historic Fleming Stadium. Morehead City defeated Wilson, 7-5, last Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:00.
