HOLLY SPRINGS, NC–The Morehead City Marlins continued their record-breaking year at Holly Springs, defeating the Salamanders 15-3 in seven innings.
The win marks the Marlins’ third run-rule win in a row, a CPL first. The Marlins already broke the single-season CPL record for run-rule wins, now with 11 on the season, and set a CPL record with 10 All-Stars.
Morehead City mashed the ball all night with five home runs, three of which were from Jakob Haynes. Haynes’ final line featured three runs, eight RBIs, and one walk in four at-bats. His first and second home runs each had one baserunner on. Haynes’ third was a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Braxton Thomas and Ethan Dillon also went yard, their first and second of the season, respectively. Dillon’s was also a grand slam, scoring Braxton Thomas, Joey Calabretti, and Peyton Watts in the process.
The Marlins had 14 total hits at the plate, continuing their dominant season, which has been even more spectacular since the All-Star Break. During this three-game stretch, Morehead City has outscored opponents 38-5. The team’s run differential after the win is a staggering +132, a mark that leads the league by a whopping 60 runs over the Asheboro Zookeepers.
Aidan Newton shoved on the mound, allowing four hits and three runs with seven strikeouts. Newton allowed only one baserunner in the first four innings, a single from Brady Lester.
Sage Ferguson came in to finish out the game, retiring the side in the sixth and seventh innings with five strikeouts.
