Marlins Shut Out Bacon to Take Game 1

MACON, GA — The Morehead City Marlins moved one win closer to their 2nd straight Petitt Cup Championship, shutting out the Macon Bacon 3-0 at Luther Williams Field.

Tyler Blomster (Colorado School of Mines) got the start for the Marlins, and threw six shutout innings, allowing only one hit, three walks, and striking out eight batters.

The game was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings, with Cory Bartholomew (West Georgia) throwing 4.2 innings of no-hit ball.

The Marlins, however, scored before picking up a hit. Bryan Kowalski (Pfeiffer) drew a walk in the 5th, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch from reliever Walker Barlow.

In the 6th inning, the Marlins added another run. Back-to-back singles from Blaze Glenn (Youngstown State) and Jack Harris (SF State) started off the inning, and on an attempted double steal, Bacon catcher Josh Nowak threw it into centerfield, allowing Glenn to score and making it 2-0 Morehead City.

A Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) RBI single in the 8th extended the Marlins lead to 3-0, and Cal Hehnke (Omaha) threw three shutout frames to lock up the save and the Marlins win.

The Marlins will try to finish off the Bacon and take home their 2nd straight Petitt Cup Championship on Saturday night at Big Rock Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. If necessary, game 3 will be Sunday at Big Rock Stadium at the same time.
