Morehead City N.C.- The regular season ends in style for the Morehead City Marlins (37-14) as the top the Edenton Steamers (26-26) 6-2.
The Marlins offense scratched a run across in three straight innings starting in the bottom of the second off of an RBI double from Zach Miller (University of Delaware) that scored the game's first run.
Fast forward to the bottom of the third, it was Daniel Little's (University Of Richmond) ground out to second to plated Colby Johnson (University of Charleston) to make it a 2-0 Marlin lead. Then in the home half of the fourth with two outs Miller came to the plate and hit a line drive over the left field wall for his fifth home run on the year and extended the Marlins lead to three.
All while Marlins starting pitcher Doug Smith (Toledo University) turned out one of his best starts of the summer going 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and giving up one unearned run.
But in the top of the sixth, after the Steamers scratched across their first run of the night and two runners on, the Marlins made the change to bring Braden Scott (Indiana University) out to the mound. Scott proceeded to get a pair of strikeouts and worked out of the jam and maintain a 3-1 Marlin advantage.
Later in the bottom of the seventh the Marlins tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the form of RBI base-knocks from Johnson and Jacob Reimold (Saint Leo University).
The offense followed it up with another run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 6-1 lead heading into the ninth.
The Steamers were able to scratch a run off of Bryan Kowalski (Pfeiffer University) but the Marlins closed the game out with the 6-2 final.
The win extended the Marlins mark for most wins in a summer to 37. Morehead City is back in action tomorrow night in the first round of the CPL playoffs as they play host to the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
