Marlins Tie Franchise Single-Season Win Mark

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (34-14) split the doubleheader with Wilmington (17-34) on the final night of the regular season. With the 3-0 victory in Game 2, the Marlins matched the franchise's highest win total in a single-season since the inaugural 2010 season, when the Marlins used six more games to reach the same mark.

Game 1:

Jake Lewis (UNC-Greensboro) made his third start of the summer and pitched two innings in a game that would be split between four different arms. Lewis surrendered just one hit and struck out four.

Wilmington struck first in the top of third inning after a two-out walk, stolen base and a single to bring in the game's first run.

The Sharks added two more runs off two singles and a walk in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) made his team-most 22nd appearance of the summer and got three-consecutive ground outs in the in the fifth inning.

Joe Mason (Pitt CC) got on base in all three of his plate appearances, drawing two walks and singling up the middle in the fourth. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.

Game 2:

The Marlins flipped the script in the second game of the night when they got on the board early. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) knocked his seventh double of the summer to left-center field to lead off the bottom half of the opening frame. Shepherd then notched a two-out single to score Johnson as the first run of the game. Heath Mitchem (Catawba College) then drew a walk to place runners at the corners. A delayed steal from Mitchem allowed Shepherd to score. A single to right field from Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) brought Mitchem into score and gave the Marlins a 3-0 advantage.

Mason Duke (Alabama) made his sixth start of the season on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings. The junior struck out five Sharks and limited their offense to just one hit. Duke finished his night after retiring 10-straight batters on his way to his Coastal Plain League best sixth win.

Charlie King (Davidson College) took over in the fifth inning and struck out the side in his fourth appearance.

Austin Dickey (Louisville) picked up two strikeouts in a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) secured his CPL-Best ninth save of the summer after striking out the final batter of the game.
