Marlins Clinch Second-Half Crown In Road Win

Holly Springs, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (33-13) ended Holly Springs (20-30) playoff hopes by defeating the Salamanders 6-3 at Ting Stadium. For the first time in franchise history the Marlins have clinched the First and Second-Half Titles.

The Salamanders scored first in the bottom of the opening frame after notching two hits.

The Marlins offense answered back in the top of the second inning with five hits. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) and Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) led off with a singles to the outfield. Brendan Dougherty's (Bradley University) single scored Mason to tie the game at one. Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) followed with a single of his own to score Shepherd. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky University) notched his fifth double of the season that scored Dougherty to give the Marlins a 3-1 advantage.

Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast University) made his fourth start of the summer and pitched four innings, allowing just one run. The junior struck out two batters in his outing.

Danton Hyman (Newberry College) led off the top of third inning with his first home run of the summer to push Morehead City's lead to three, 4-1.

Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) made his team-most 21st appearance out of the bullpen and tossed two hitless and scoreless innings. The senior notched two strikeouts while facing just eight batters on his way to his fourth win of the summer.

Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) came on in the eighth and left two Salamanders stranded in scoring position to end the inning. The sophomore right-hander picked up his 29th strikeout of the season in the frame.

After Holly Springs scored two in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to one, Dawson Moser took over for his 17th appearance this season. With a runner on second the Salamanders hitter took a pitch to right field that Johnson fielded and threw what would've been the tying run out at the plate.

The Marlins added four insurance runs back in the top of the ninth. With one out Gordon reached on an infield error and Johnson followed with a single. Hyman then notched his third hit of the night and his ninth double of the summer to bring two runs in and push the score to 6-3 in Morehead City's favor. Back-to-walks to Shepherd and Colin Allman (Newberry College) brought Hyman into score. Dougherty then singled in the infield to bring in his team-best 27th RBI and give the Marlins a five-run lead, 8-3.
