Marlins Defeat SwampDogs in Rain-Shortened Game

Fayetteville, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (30-13) defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs (22-22) 3-0 at J.P. Riddle Stadium in a five-inning contest that was shortened due to rain and lightning. The Marlins improved to 10-0 against the SwampDogs on the season.

With one out in the top of the first inning Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) laced a single up the middle for the first hit of the night. Fayetteville's starting pitcher Joey Wiemer then delivered three-consecutive walks to bring Lewis into score the first run of the contest.

Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) made his third start and 14th appearance of the summer for the Marlins on the mound. Lumbert worked through two innings and notched three strikeouts.

Danton Hyman (Newberry College) led off the third inning by drawing a walk. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) poked a single through the left side of the infield which was followed by Hunter Shepherd's (Catawba College) ground ball that was mishandled to load the bases. Colin Allman (Newberry College) took a pitch to right field in the air that allowed Hyman to tag and score the second run of the night. Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) drew the third walk of the frame to bring Mason into score and give Morehead City a 3-0 lead.

Mason Duke (Alabama) took over in the third inning and earned his fifth win of the season, which is tied for the most in the Coastal Plain League. Duke allowed just one hit, while striking out two SwampDogs.

Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) earned his third save of the summer as he faced just three batters in the fifth inning.

The Marlins were threatening with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning when the rain downpour began and the tarp was put on the field and would not be taken back off on Saturday night. With five innings completed the contest is a completed game and goes into the records as a 3-0 Marlins win.
