Marlins Beat Sharks 6-3 In Storm-Shortened Contest

Wilmington, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (29-12) defeated fellow East Division foe Wilmington (14-27) 6-3 in a contest that was cut short by lightning and rain showers.

With one out in the top of the fourth Joe Mason (Pitt CC) notched his team-most ninth double of the summer. The Marlins next three hitters all drew walks to bring Mason into score to tie the game at one, after Wilmington had a solo home run in the first inning.

Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) ground ball to the right side resulted in a defensive error that scored Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) and gave Morehead City the lead. A pop fly from Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) in fair territory was caught by Wilmington and was deep enough to bring in Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) as the third Marlin run. Gordon's delayed steal forced another defensive error that brought Colin Allman (Newberry College) home to give the Marlins a 4-1 lead at the end of the top of the fourth.

Octavio Mirbal (King University) started his eighth game of the summer on the mound for the Marlins. After allowing one run in the opening frame, the lefty only allowed one hit outside of the first inning. The senior posted six completed innings after pitching into the seventh inning. Mirabal notched five strikeouts as he faced 23 Shark hitters in his 11th appearance.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning Danton Hyman (Newberry College) drew a walk. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) then put the ball in play and the Sharks second baseman committed a throwing error that placed the two runners in scoring position. Mason's single through the right side scored Hyman and pushed the lead to four. Lewis then trotted home on a wild pitch to give Morehead City a 6-1 lead.

Wilmington answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs, off one hit and two walks, to take the score to 6-3.

With storms approaching and lightning in the near area the game was delayed and then suspended, resulting in a 6-3 Marlins win.
