Edenton, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (27-11) used a season-high four home runs to defeat the Edenton Steamers (18-23) 11-3 at Historic Hicks Field on Saturday night.
The offense got things started in the top of the second inning with six early runs. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) began the inning by drawing a walk. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) then reached on a fielder's choice in the infield. Catcher Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) then belted his first homerun of the summer to put the Marlins ahead 3-0. Colin Allman (Newberry College) reached base after being hit by a pitch. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) pushed a single through the right side. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) then notched his team-best eighth double of the season to bring in two runs. Mason then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought into score on Brendan Dougherty's (Bradley University) for his team-most 25th RBI.
Jake Lewis (UNC-Greensboro) made his second start of the summer for the Marlins and threw five complete innings. The junior allowed three runs, but struck out four batters and didn't surrender a walk.
In the top of the third inning Lewis blasted a homerun over the right field wall for his second home run of the summer. The long ball gave Morehead City 7-0 advantage and marked the second-time this season the Marlins have posted two homeruns in a single game.
The Steamers used four hits to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning and cut the lead to four.
With one out in the fifth inning Lewis singled to left field and was moved to second a Gordon ground ball. Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) then recorded his third double of the summer that scored Lewis to give the Marlins an 8-3 advantage.
Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) came on the sixth for his 12th appearance of the season and held the Steamers scoreless.
In the top of the seventh inning Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) took a pitch over the tall left field wall for his second homerun in as many games.
Right-hander DJ Laxton (Catawba College) took over for the final three innings in his third appearance out of the bullpen. Laxton worked through the innings with five strikeouts.
Pimentel led off the eighth inning with the Marlins fourth long ball of the evening as he took a pitch straight out of the park in centerfield to give the Marlins an 11-3 lead.
Edenton posted two runs in the bottom of the eighth on three hits and cu the Morehead City lead to six.
