Marlins Drop Thursday Night Contest At Wilmington

Wilmington, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (26-11) fell in an East Division match-up against the Wilmington Sharks (14-24) in a 9-8 game at Legion Stadium.

Leadoff hitter Danton Hyman (Newberry College) started the game with a single to left field. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) and Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) each drew a walk to load the bases. After Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) was hit by a pitch, Hyman crossed home for the first run of the game. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) then a sent a pitch in the air to center that allowed Mason to tag and score and give the Marlins a two run advantage.

The Sharks would answer with three runs in the bottom of the first one run in the second to take the lead at 4-2.

In the top of the third inning Shepherd drew his second walk of the night with two outs. Johnson then blasted a pitch over the centerfield wall for his second homerun of the summer to tie the game at four.

In bottom of the fifth and sixth innings Wilmington capitalized off three Marlin errors and used six hits to score a combined five runs to make it a 9-5 game

After a 20 minute delay due to the stadium lights going out, the Marlins got fired up in the top of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter Collin Allman (Newberry College) drew a walk, before Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) also pinch hit and took a single up the middle. His college teammate Hyman then singled to right to score Allman to make it 9-6. Gordon came into score on a Mason sacrifice-fly to score Gordon. Brendan Dougherty's ground ball to the right side brought Hyman into score and cut the Wilmington lead to one at 9-8.

  • Morehead City drops to 26-11 overall and 13-6 record on the road, remaining in first place of the CPL and in the East division in the overall standings.
  • When scoring first in a game the Marlins fall to 17-7 on the summer.
  • In games where the Marlins hit at least one homerun the team is now 10-4.
  • Morehead City is 7-5 against Wilmington.
