MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (25-10) became the first team in the Coastal Plain League to reach the 25 win mark with a 6-2 win over the Edenton Steamers (16-21).
The Steamers began the game with back-to-back singles to score one run in the opening frame. The Marlins answered back in the bottom half of the inning after Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) followed with a fielder's choice to reach base. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) singled to right-center and advanced to second once the ball was bobbled in the outfield, allowing Dougherty to score the tying run. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) pulled a single to right field that scored the go-ahead run to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.
Zach Keenan (Middle Tennessee) tossed 5.2 innings in his sixth start of the summer. The freshman allowed just two earned runs and struck out three in his outing.
Joe Mason (Pitt CC) blasted the first pitch of the third inning for his third homerun of the summer and pushed the Morehead City lead to 3-1.
Zach Vennaro (Mount Olive) entered in the sixth inning and used three pitches to record a strikeout in his season debut. The senior sat the Steamers down in the following inning without allowing a baserunner in his first appearance.
The first six batters of the seventh inning reached base for the Marlins. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) and Mason each drew a walk, before Dougherty notched his team-best 29 RBI. Shepherd drew a walk and pinch runner Riley Campbell (Toledo) came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Marlins a 6-2 lead that would hold for the final.
Octavio Mirabal (King University) was handed the ball for the eighth inning and kept Edenton in order, only facing the minimum of three batters.
