MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (22-7) used a Will Johnson home run to walk-off against the Fayetteville SwampDogs (14-16), 6-4, at Big Rock Stadium on Friday night.
Zach Keenan (Middle Tennessee State) made his scheduled two-inning outing in his fifth start of the summer. After allowing a leadoff single Keenan retired the first six SwampDogs in order, using a double-play to end the first inning.
The SwampDogs scored first in the third inning, using a trio of hits to put two runs on the scoreboard. The Marlins answered back in the bottom of the third after DJ Laxton (Catawba College) singled in his first plate appearance of the summer. Will Johnson drew his team-tying 22nd walk of the season to move Laxton to second. A single to right field from Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) brought Laxton into score the first run for Morehead City and cut the Fayetteville lead to 2-1.
Fayetteville went on to place their first five batters on base in the fourth inning. The visitors tacked on two runs in the frame to give them a 4-1 advantage.
The Marlins offense was awoken in the fifth inning after Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) reached base via an infield error, William Mapes (North Georgia) walked and Johnson singled to begin the frame. Lewis then earned his second and third RBI of the night with a double off the left field wall. A sacrifice fly from Luke Shadid (Bradley University) to right field brought Johnson into score and tie the game at four.
Octavio Mirabal (King University) tossed 2.2 innings and struck out five of the nine batters he faced. The senior held the SwampDogs scoreless, only allowing one hit.
Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) took over in the eighth and threw two innings in his 11th appearance. Moser faced the minimum of six batters, striking out two, on his way to earning his second win of the season.
Delevie led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to the left side. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) came on as a pinch runner and stole his ninth bag of the season to put him in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt from Mapes moved Mason to third. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) then connected on a pitch and sent it over the wall in left field to win the game, 6-4.
