Marlins Close Out First-Half With Win No. 20

MOREHEAD CITY. – Morehead City's (20-5) pitching staff recorded their second shutout of the season as the Marlins defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs (13-12), 6-0, on Saturday night to close the best first-half in franchise history.

Starting pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long recorded his best outing of the summer. The sophomore threw seven complete innings, striking out a season-high 10 batters, while not surrendering a walk or run. The SwampDogs notched just four hits off Gipson-Long and had only one player reach as far as third base.

The Marlins offense got things rolling in the bottom of the first inning after Fayetteville's starter plunked Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) and surrendered three-consecutive hits. Bryce Delevie's (Columbus State) single to right field brought home Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) and Luke Shadid (Bradley University) to give the Marlins their third and fourth runs of the game.

Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) yanked a one-out single to right field in the bottom of the third. Delevie then reached on an infield error and William Mapes (North Georgia) drew a walk to load the bases. Riley Campbell (University of Toledo) notched his sixth RBI of the summer with a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the lead to 5-0.

With one out in the sixth inning Lewis took a pitch to the opposite field outfield wall and easily reached second, but saw the throw coming in to second late, and darted to third base safely. A groundout in the following at bat from Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte) brought Lewis into score for the second time and give the Marlins a 6-0 advantage.

Gipson-Long handed the ball off to Austin Dickey (University of Louisville) in the eighth and after allowing a leadoff walk would record three-straight pop outs. Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) was the third pitcher of the night and posted a pair of strikeouts to secure win No. 20 of the season.
