Marlins Defeat Salamanders 3-2 On The Road

Holly Springs, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (13-3) defeated Holly Springs (6-13) 3-2 on the road Thursday night at Ting Park.

The Marlins started the game with three lead off singles. With the bases loaded Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) walked and put the first run of the game on the board as Joe Mason (Pitt CC) came into score.

Octavio Mirabal (King University) made his fourth start of the season. The senior threw five innings, allowing just five hits and two runs. Mirabal struck out four of the 20 Salamanders he faced.

Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) doubled to left centerfield to lead off the top of the second inning. A two-out double from Mason that bounced off the right field wall scored Gordon and pushed the Morehead City lead to 2-0.

Holly Spring's Peyton Isaacson plated a two-run homerun over the right field wall in the bottom of the third to tie the game at two.

In the top of the fifth Will Johnson reached on an infield error and stole second base with one out in the frame. In the following at bat a wild pitch allowed Johnson to take third. Luke Shadid's timely grounder to the right side of the infield allowed Johnson to score to give the Marlins the lead back at 3-2.

Zach Barnes (East Carolina University) came on in the sixth and tossed two innings, only allowing the Salamanders one hit.

Ashton Raines (Bloomsburg University) took over in the eighth and recorded a ground out to start and ended the frame with the team's 16th double-play of the season.

Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) entered the game on the mound in the bottom of the ninth allowed two base runners in the inning after recording the first out. With two runners aboard, Wells struck out the next two hitters to secure the win.
