MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (12-3) halted the Fayetteville SwampDogs (7-7) winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Monday night at Big Rock Stadium.
After an hour delay due to field conditions, the first pitch was thrown at 8:05 p.m. Sawyer Gipson-Long got two innings of work in his third start of the season, striking out two and surrendering only one hit.
The bottom of the first inning began with three consecutive singles for Morehead City. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) was brought into score the first run of the game off Craig Lewis's (Seton Hill) single to right field. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) came into the score off of Cammarata's RBI sacrifice fly to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
In the following offensive frame, Joe Mason reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, as the defense tried to turn a double-play, Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) came into score. The run extended Morehead City's lead to 3-0 after two innings.
The SwampDogs struck back in the third, after Javon Martin lead off reaching base via an error. Martin came into score on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to two. In the top of the fourth inning a double from Trent Franson scored Fayetteville's second run of the contest, making it a 3-2 score.
Right-hander Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) entered the game in fourth inning and didn't allow a run in 3.1 innings thrown. Marklund would only allow one base runner in his team-most ninth appearance this summer. The senior notched a strikeout in each of the three innings thrown on his way to his first win of the summer.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Riley Campbell (Toledo) reached base off an error on the SwampDogs third baseman. Campbell then stole second and moved to third on Hyman's third hit off the evening. Cammarata's fly ball to centerfield brought Campbell into score, pushing the lead back to two, 4-2.
Morehead City added an insurance run in the eighth as Campbell's single to right field brought Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) into score the final run of the game.
Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) tossed two scoreless innings to close the game and earn his first save of the season.
