Holly Springs, N.C. – Morehead City's Kenny Wells has been named the Coastal Plain League Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Sunday afternoon. Wells, a sophomore at Seton Hill University (Pa.), recorded two saves in as many outings during this past week.
In his first appearance of the week, on June 3, the right-hander came on in the 10th inning of an extra inning affair on the road at Holly Springs. With two runners on base to begin the inning due to the International Tiebreaker Rule, Wells used a pick off move to catch the lead runner stealing for the first out. The closer then recorded a strike out and ground out to end the game and secure the win.
Wells followed that up on June 6, when he came on in the bottom of the ninth inning at home against Wilson. The righty made quick work of the Tobs, using just eight pitches that resulted in a ground out back to himself and two strike outs to end the game.
Wells leads the CPL in saves with three on the summer. The Seton Hill Griffin has tossed a combined eight scoreless and hitless innings in the three appearances, while striking out eight hitters and not allowing any walks.
The Marlins return home on Monday night to take on the Wilmington Sharks at 7:05 p.m. from Big Rock Stadium.
