Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins (30-13) become the first team in the Coastal Plain League (CPL) to reach the 30 win mark with the 7-2 victory over the Holly Springs Salamanders (17-27).
The win was done as a team as the three arms for Morehead City combined for 14 strikeouts and the offense scored a run in six of the eight innings they came to the plate.
The starter for the Marlins was Tyler Blomster (Colorado School of Mines) who after surrendering two runs in the top of the first buckled down to down six innings with seven strikeouts in route to picking up the quality start.
While down 2-0 in the home half of the first, Jack Harris (San Francisco State University) cut the deficit in half with an RBI base-knock. An inning later, Zach Miller picked up his 11th RBI of the summer on a sac fly to left that tied the game at 2.
The game's scoring was put on hold until the bottom of the fifth when Morehead City had runners at the corners and had Daniel Little (University of Richmond) steal second to force a throw down and allowed Jace Mercer (University of Cincinnati) to score to put the Marlins up 3-2.
From there the Marlins scored four runs in the final three frames they came to the plate with Colby Johnson (University of Charleston), Harris, Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) and Little driving in those runs.
Following Blomster on the bump was Ryder Yakel (Harding University) who struck out the side in his lone inning of work. He was then succeeded by Keegan Foge (University of North Alabama) who tossed two scoreless innings to put the game to its 7-2 final score.
Tonight marked the 32nd time in 43 games that Marlins pitching picked up 10 or more strikeouts in a game and was the third straight game that they did so.
