EDENTON, N.C. -- The Morehead City offense provided an early fireworks show at Hicks Field on Tuesday night, homering three times in a 6-4 win over the Edenton Steamers.
The win extended the Marlins winning streak to 13 games — the longest in franchise history and tied for the longest in CPL history.
In the 9th inning, tied at 4-4, Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) went deep off of new Steamer pitcher Grant Crosby to give the Marlins a late lead.
Immediately afterwards, Zack Miller (Delaware) hit a pinch hit, two-run homer, his first of the summer, to double the Marlin lead. 5 of the 6 Marlin runs on the night came via the long ball.
The first run of the game came all the way back in the 1st, when Dusty Baker (East Carolina) stole home. However, the Steamers responded with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the following half inning, as the Marlins a 4-2 lead after Colby Johnson (Charleston) hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 3rd, his 1st of the summer.
The Steamers fought their way back, scoring once in the 3rd and once in the 4th so send the game to a stalemate at 4-4.
Both bullpens were dominant for the following three innings, with Keegan Foge (Northern Alabama), Braden Scott (Indiana) and Cal Hehnke (Omaha) throwing 3.1 scoreless frames for the Marlins.
Blake Beers (Michigan) was sharp in his Edenton debut, throwing three scoreless innings for the Steamers to keep them in the game.
Cal Hehnke finished off the 9th inning for Morehead City to earn his 2nd win of the summer.
The Marlins are back in action tomorrow night at Big Rock Stadium as they host the Peninsula Pilots.
